Staying Active While Traveling

Summer is here and for many families that means it’s time to travel! Vacation may take you out of your routine, but keeping healthy and active doesn’t have to be hard.

Road trip vs. air travel – Driving across the country? Walk around and stretch your legs at rest stops. Not only will this help you stay active, but it may reduce the risk of blood clots. Laps around the airport while waiting for your flight is an easy option for those who are traveling by plane.

Do your research – Plan ahead so you don’t miss any exciting attractions. No matter where you go, there are likely to be outdoor excursions such as hiking or walking on the beach. Guided walking tours or other activities specific to your destination are also options for staying active.

Walking to sight see – Ditch the ride share apps and walk to your destinations when sightseeing. Many popular destinations, such as Washington, D.C. or Charleston, SC, are walkable and will allow you to take in all the sights while getting your steps in.

Working out at the hotel – Many hotels have fitness facilities, and some even have recommended running routes nearby. For those that do not, there are countless options online for quick bodyweight workouts in your hotel room. Push-ups, squats, and planks are among the most effective bodyweight exercises that are equipment-free and can be performed anywhere.

Resistance bands are a great tool that travel well due to their small size and flexible nature. Remember that there is safety in numbers and it is best not to head out for a run alone in an unknown area.

Make healthy food choices –While not exercise related, making good food and beverage choices is still relevant to keeping healthy on vacation. Indulging nonstop will leave you feeling sluggish.

Though they may seem harmless, some beverages contain lots of sugar and calories. Staying well hydrated is important, particularly if you vacation in a hot climate, so keep in mind that caffeine and alcohol can contribute to dehydration.

Be realistic – This is vacation, don’t stress about a few missed workouts. Be realistic about your goals for maintaining your fitness and making healthy choices when traveling. Everyone deserves a break now and then!
