Honoring Veterans

November 2022 Blog

Each November we celebrate Veteran’s Day, a federal holiday honoring military veterans. Veteran’s Day was originally established as the commemoration of the WW1 armistice and has since expanded to honor all military veterans. There are a variety of charities and organizations that seek to honorand/or support veterans and the sacrifices they have made. Below are just a few of the many organizations serving veterans.

One such organization is Honor Flight, a nonprofit that transports veterans to Washington, D.C. to view the memorials of the wars they fought in. The program currently focuses on World War 2 veterans but is transitioning to Korea & Vietnam veterans as well. Founded in 2005, Honor Flight has served over 245,000 veterans.

Though it does not exclusively serve veterans, Puppies Behind Bars is an organization that trains prison inmates to raise service dogs for veterans and first responders. The program has a dual purpose: rehabilitate inmates and provide a mental & physical support animal to a veteran or first responder. Service animals have proven benefits physically and emotionally. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects many veterans, with over 271,000 Vietnam veterans alone afflicted by the condition, and studies have shown that service animals can have a positive impact on veterans struggling with PTSD.

The Fisher House Foundation provides free housing to families of veterans who are undergoing medical treatments. Typically located near military or VA hospitals, Fisher Houses contain up to 21 suites and served27,000 families in 2021 alone.

Disabled American Veterans Charityprovides veterans rides to medical appointments, assists in filing for benefits, and connects veterans with employment opportunities. DAV even has a special initiative to combat homelessness among veterans. It is estimated that there are currently over 40,000 homeless veterans in the United States.
