Benefits of Swimming

Swimming has become an increasingly popular method of exercise in recent years. It is a no impact, full body workout that is safe todo every day and is rarely associated with injury. Unlike exercises such as running or weightlifting, swimming does not require rest days because it is safer for the joints. Benefits of swimming include:

-       Achieve & maintain healthy weight

-       Improve muscle tone and bone health

-       Strengthen heart & lungs

-       Lower blood pressure and heart rate

-       Reduce anxiety and improve mental health

-       Increases energy levels

Who should try swimming?

Swimming is an ideal exercise for anyone, especially people with certain medical conditions. Arthritis patients find swimming in warm water to be an ideal exercise because it soothes their joints. People with low bone density also benefit from swimming because swimming has been shown to improve bone health and density, especially in aging women.

How to get started & staying safe

Before starting a swimming exercise program, it is imperative to know basic water safety. It is a good idea to take swimming lessons. Consulting a doctor is also advisable.

As with any exercise program, it is recommended to create goals and a plan to stay consistent. Swimming once every few weeks will not yield results, so beginners are recommended to hit the pool 2-3 times a week to reach their fitness goals. During swim workouts, make sure to stay hydrated and focus on technique. A swim coach can assist both new and veteran swimmers in executing all different strokes correctly. Following a workout, make sure to stretch in order to maintain flexibility for future workouts.

Monitor exertion levels constantly as it can be a dangerous situation to become exhausted while swimming. Do not swim without a lifeguard present. Lap swimming can be associated with shoulder injuries, so people with pre-existing rotator cuff damage should take special care not to overdo it.

Aqua group fitness classes

Just as with land-based group fitness classes, aquatics group exercise programs keep participants accountable and provide a social atmosphere. Some aqua fitness classes incorporate weights or various pieces of pool equipment to provide a strengthening component to the class. The Bridge currently offers Aqua Fit, Aqua Splash, and Deep Water classes throughout the week.

Swimming for health

The benefits of swimming regularly for exercise have been studied extensively, and the general consensus of the health & wellness community is an overwhelming approval of incorporating swimming into an active lifestyle. It is never too late to begin leading an active lifestyle, so get in the pool today!
